Ferrario’s research has advanced understanding and treatment of high blood pressure and vascular disease by identifying the mechanisms of action of angiotensin in the brain through his discovery of the area postrema as a site for the action of the hormone, the role of the heart in the development of arterial hypertension, and elucidating new endocrine pathways leading to the formation and action of angiotensins. Pioneering research in the renin-angiotensin system includes the discovery of the antihypertensive function of angiotensin-(1-7), the role of angiotensin converting enzyme 2 as a component of the opposing arm of the renin angiotensin system (3, 12), and the furthering of understanding as to how inhibitors of angiotensin converting enzyme and angiotensin receptor antagonists act on the body’s nervous and endocrine mechanisms to regulate blood pressure.

naemi_ebm_martinez-ga_001 Martinez Gustavo A. Simon Bolivar University Barranquilla Colombia naemi_ebm_pinto-el_001 Pinto Edgar Leal Northeastern University Boston MA USA

Dr Leal-Pinto ́s entire career, and most recent work in the Logothetis lab at North Eastern University, has been aimed at developing the lipid bilayer as an assay for ion channel activity. Most recent work is exemplified by his recent contribution to the gating of a G protein-sensitive K+ channel. In the past year, in a team with Dr Louis De Felice we discussing the possibility of studying neurotransmitter transporters in bilayers, overexpressing hDAT in oocytes, prepare liposomes from the surface membranes and fuse these to the planar bilayer, a result with significant implications for understanding neurotransmitter transporters and well suited for the R21 mechanism. Dr Leal-Pinto has been performing lipid bilayer experiments for more than 20 years. He successfully reconstituted and studied a large number of channel systems, including the multidrug resistance protein, an inwardly rectifying K+ channel, a urate channel/transporter, and a nucleic acid channel. He has developed the support protocols for such studies, including a separation method using personal to purify membranes, a sonication process to make proteoliposomes for fusion with planar bilayers, and optimization of the lipid composition of the bilayer for superior reconstitution. As PI or Co-Investigator on several previous universities- and NIH- funded grants, he collaborated with other researchers and produced several peer- reviewed publications from each project.
