Introduction

Due to the increasing prevalence of viral infections and the ability of these human pathogens to develop resistance to current treatment strategies, there is a great need to find and develop new compounds to combat them. These molecules must have low toxicity, specific activity and high bioavailability. The most suitable compounds for this task are usually derived from natural sources. Therefore, natural products are considered one of the most positive and practical approaches to defeat the antiviral infections. Furthermore, drug delivery systems are believed to increase their pharmaceutical efficacy and the therapeutic index by protecting and stabilizing natural bioactive molecules against body fluids’ enzymes and/or unsuitable physicochemical conditions while preserving the surrounding healthy tissues from toxicity. Therefore, the research community all over the world is advancing the understanding of natural products, bio-actives, and drug delivery systems, to develop more effective strategies to fight emerging viral infections. In recent past several successful attempts have been made to exploit the potential of natural products and bio-actives in antiviral drug research and development for accomplishing the objective of identifying novel druggable antiviral molecules. In addition, various drug delivery systems have also been explored to protect and stabilize these molecules, to increase the solubility and bioavailability, to reduce the toxicity, and to increase the spectrum of activity thereby increasing their overall therapeutic value. This subject is quite promising as the scientific community in the whole world is looking towards natural products for the development of new targets for the emerging diseases. It is strongly believed that this special issue will attract a number of good research and review papers which will serve a useful purpose in this field. Moreover, as this is an emerging area of research, the published manuscripts will have a good number of citations which will help to boost the presence and image of the Journal in the scientific community.
